Oppressed Uighurs – After Putin, an arrest warrant against Xi is now also required

Date:

Following the issuance of an international arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin for the alleged abduction of thousands of Ukrainian children from occupied territories, Uyghur activists are now calling for a similar decision in the case of China. Specifically, an indictment has been demanded before the International Criminal Court in The Hague against the Chinese head of state Xi Jinping. Reference is made to the systematic oppression of the approximately ten million Uyghurs in China’s Xinjiang region.

Last year’s report by the UN Human Rights Commission said, among other things, that the level of repression against the Muslim minority in northwestern China amounted to “crimes against humanity”. Witness accounts would indicate “patterns of torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment”. A series of leaked government data and photos has provided insight into Beijing’s detention strategy in recent years. According to research, Chinese authorities have detained more than a million Uighurs and other mainly Muslim minorities in detention camps. Beijing claims these are vocational training centers visited voluntarily.

However, former detainees report rape, torture and political indoctrination. Guards control the camps with tear gas, stun guns and spiked batons, according to government documents AFP accessed in 2018. In May last year, an international media consortium published thousands of police photos, speeches and instructions from the authorities. The record includes a 2017 speech by former Xinjiang Party leader Chen Quanguo who said any prisoner who tried to escape even a few steps would be “shot”.

Forced labor and heavy contraception
More than 2,800 police photos show prisoners, including minors. One photo showed a prisoner in a so-called tiger chair – a torture device in which the legs are overstretched. China has also been accused of exploiting Uyghurs for the production of export goods, particularly textiles, through its “labor transfer” programs. Beijing claims the initiatives will help fight poverty by providing well-paid jobs to the rural population. According to scientists and human rights lawyers, Beijing’s strategy in Xinjiang also includes harsh coercive contraceptive measures. According to this, since 2017, attempts have been made to drastically reduce the birth rate of immigrants with sterilization and the insertion of IUDs. China, on the other hand, attributes the drop in births to economic development and the change in social values in the region.

“Putin has been put on an ICC manhunt for kidnapping thousands of Ukrainian children. Why then is an arrest warrant not also issued against Xi Jinping?” Uyghur activist Rushan Abbas said to the responsible authorities in The Hague via bild.de on Saturday. In Xinjiang, too, children of Uyghur parents are abducted and sent to re-education camps. “Their parents do not know where they are being taken and all communication with the families has been cut off,” said Abbas, who now estimates the number of abducted children at one million. Incidentally, the leadership in Beijing speaks of “educational institutions” in this context. The “transformed” children would then be taken to other regions of China, to adoptive families. This has been happening for years, the activist tells the German newspaper.

Amnesty complains about “double standards in the West” when it comes to human rights
Just a few days ago, the human rights organization complained about the “double standards of the West” when it came to human rights violations, citing, among other things, its dealings with China. For example, although massive human rights violations were committed against the Uighurs in China in 2022, Beijing escaped international condemnation from the General Assembly, the Security Council and the Human Rights Council of the United Nations. Russia’s “resolute and welcoming approach” stands in “stark contrast to grossly inadequate action in the face of current conflicts,” according to the organization’s annual report for 2022/23.
