Work to cover the BI-637 highway as it passes through Leioa will begin the week of April 17. With an investment of 65 million euros, the project to cover La Avanzada will transform the current trench, through which thousands of vehicles drive in the open air, into a new urban core with 4500 square meters of pedestrian area and green areas.
As reported by the Diputación, the Deputy for Infrastructure and Territorial Development, Imanol Pradales, and the Mayor of Leioa, Iban Rodríguez, have announced the start date of the works from the premises that will serve as citizen service office.
Located at 54 Calle Sabino Arana, the office will provide information to residents during the 41 months the work is expected to take longer.
The works, which include the improvement and modernization of the existing tunnel in the Avanzada, will allow the current walkway to the 824 meters long in the center of Leioa and suppress the noise disturbance which now affects 2900 inhabitants of this city.

From the Diputación they have underlined the “great improvement” in terms of noise pollution for the residents of the area, because there will be 850 meters of soundproof screens on the edge of the road.
In addition, and with the aim of “specifically improving protection in facilities as relevant as the Txomin Aresti School Complex, the Euskaltegi and Conservatory”, the non-walkable roof is extended which gives access to the mouth of the tunnel towards Bilbao up to the area around the current pedestrian walkway.
