Every ten years the reservoir must be emptied and the wall built in the 1930s must be checked. At the bottom of the lake, only the Packer Bach currently flows. At around 2:10 p.m. on Saturday, three brothers from Graz, who were guests at their grandfather’s holiday home, made a horrifying discovery: they found numerous war materials in the muddy riverbank area!
Hand grenades in the mud
First the small metal detector that Valentin Z. (12) had with him hit. A veritable sea of ammunition was already spreading a few meters away for him and his siblings Florian (20) and Laurin (23). “Initially there were only a few cartridges, but a little further on whole hand grenades were stuck in the mud. We were really stunned,” says Laurin, describing the exciting find.
The police, alerted by the brothers, discovered that numerous war materials such as grenades and cartridges had been deposited in an area of about 500 square meters. The demining service in Vienna was alerted, but luckily there was nothing dangerous about it. Nothing stands in the way of work on the sheet piling on the Pack, which was built in the 1930s.
Bomb of 250 kilos in the Mur
It was not until December last year that those involved in Feldkirchen held their breath: an American bomb weighing 250 kilos was found during excavation work in the Mur. About 30 residential buildings were evacuated, the highway was closed and air traffic stopped to defuse the war relic.
