According to official information, Russia is stationing its tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus on the borders of NATO territory. The weapons “will be transferred to the western border of our union state and will improve security,” Russian Ambassador to Belarus Boris Gryzlov said.
Gryzlov did not provide further information on Belarusian state television about where exactly the weapons should be stationed. Belarus borders Lithuania and Latvia to the north and Poland to the west, all of which form part of NATO’s eastern flank. The two neighboring countries are formally part of a “union state”.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said on Friday he would allow Russia to deploy ICBMs if necessary.
Lukashenko would have asked for nuclear weapons
Belarus is one of Moscow’s staunchest allies. Lukashenko had long asked for nuclear weapons to be stationed on its territory, Russia’s Vladimir Putin said on Russian television at the end of March. Iskander missile complexes have also been transferred to the neighboring country. The head of the Kremlin announced that the construction of a nuclear weapons bay in Belarus will be completed on July 1.
Specifically, it is a response to the possible supply of uranium munitions from Britain to Ukraine. The projectiles with depleted uranium have a special impact, for example to destroy tanks.
The nuclear weapons could not reach the US
In the past, Putin has repeatedly called on the United States to withdraw nuclear weapons from Germany, as Moscow sees this as a threat to its security. Russia does not station strategic nuclear weapons in Belarus that could reach the United States, for example. The range of tactical nuclear weapons is given as several hundred kilometers. The explosive effect is therefore between one and 50 kilotons of TNT.
