Angry Bangladeshi market vendors threw stones at firefighters because they couldn’t put out the fire fast enough. The huge fire broke out at a popular clothing market in Dhaka. Eleven people were injured.
About 600 firefighters were deployed on Tuesday to contain the flames. Several neighborhoods around the Bongo Bazar, located in the oldest part of the metropolis, were enveloped in thick black smoke. The Bongo Bazar and three adjacent markets were almost completely destroyed by the fire.
Unable to put out the fire fast enough, angry market vendors threw stones at firefighters. The police then sent another 450 officers to prevent further rioting. The flames were under control after six hours.
Warning letter ignored
Bongo Bazar is a very popular market in Dhaha. It consists of hundreds of small stalls, mainly built of wood and tin. It was already classified as a fire hazard in 2019 and since then the market people have received several warning letters.
