An unusual ‘turbulence’ has forced a pilot to make an emergency landing in South Africa. A cape cobra, one of the most dangerous snakes in Africa, had made it easy under his seat…
Pilot Rudolph Erasmus was in a small plane with four passengers on a domestic flight between two small towns when he felt something cold on his leg, local newspaper Times Live reports. When he looked down, he saw the cobra curled up under his seat, the pilot said.
Hero with iron nerves
A cobra bite has life-threatening, neurotoxic effects that can lead to death within 30 minutes to four hours. Erasmus was hailed by colleagues on Wednesday as a hero with iron nerves. After a moment of bewilderment, he informed the passengers about the planned emergency landing, according to Erasmus. He didn’t want to panic.
The aircraft was at an altitude of 3,300 meters at the time. After a few minutes, the Beechcraft Baron, a twin-engine piston aircraft, landed safely on the runway in the small town of Welkom. The passengers were slowly disembarked and taken to safety. However, the “uninvited guest” was able to escape in the meantime and, according to Erasmus, is still being sought.
