‘Dear friends’ – US constitutional judge accepted luxury travel

Date:

The longest-serving justice on the US Supreme Court is said to have allowed a billionaire to invite a Republican billionaire for luxury trips for years. For example, the arch-conservative US constitutional judge Clarence Thomas traveled to Indonesia – a trip that alone cost $ 500,000.

As the US research foundation Propublica reported Thursday, real estate magnate Harlan Crow paid the longest-serving Supreme Court justice expensive gifts — but he did not disclose these gifts.

Travel by private jet and yacht
Thomas, 74, accompanied Crow to an exclusive California wilderness resort for men and properties in the US states of Texas and New York. He would also have accepted a flight on a private jet and a yacht ride. Crow told Propublica that his gifts to the constitutional judge were “no different than the hospitality we extend to our many other dear friends.”

The report shows that the Supreme Court is the “least responsible” institution in the US central government, according to Fix the Court. The organization is committed to reforming the Supreme Court.

Newspaper: Friendship “unusual and ethically sensitive”
The New York Times called Thomas and Crow’s friendship “unusual and ethically sensitive” in 2011. According to the research foundation, Crow has donated more than $10 million to Republican political groups, including half a million dollars to a conservative lobby group founded by Thomas’s wife Ginni.
