An ice storm in eastern Canada has killed at least two people. Several million people were without power on Thursday. The storm raged in Quebec and Ontario, Canada’s two most populous provinces. An Ontario resident was killed by a falling tree. Another man was crushed by a branch west of Montreal.
Several power lines were damaged by fallen trees, leaving millions without power.
Authorities called for caution and advised residents to stay away from downed power lines and avoid walking in the woods, where ice-laden trees could fall.
“Situation Under Control”
“Montreal is devastated, but the situation is under control,” Quebec Minister of Economy and Energy Pierre Fitzgibbon said after the weather warning was lifted.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke of a “very difficult moment for the people of the region affected by this ice storm”. It was Quebec’s worst power outage since an ice storm in 1998 that left the province in chaos for weeks.
