Pope not present – Refugees carry crosses at the Colosseum in Rome

Date:

On Good Friday, the traditional Stations of the Cross at the Colosseum in Rome is imminent. This time, refugees from different countries at war have to carry the cross from station to station. It is also expected that a young Ukrainian and a young Russian will pray together.

The Vatican announced this on Friday. Refugees from Ukraine, Syria, Iraq and South Sudan are said to be involved. The wars in the world and the urgent call for peace are at the center of the Way of the Cross. During the mediations at the stations, one should point out, among other things, the suffering of Christians in some parts of the world, such as the Middle East.

The Greek Catholic Church of Santa Sophia in Rome will contribute to Ukraine. For a year this has been the hub for humanitarian aid from Italy and the Vatican for the country at war. A young Ukrainian and a young Russian are expected to pray together at the Papal Stations of the Cross at the Tenth Station. In addition, they must report on their experiences. Last year, a Ukrainian and a Russian nurse carried the cross together.

Thousands of believers expected
Thousands of Catholic faithful are expected at the Stations of the Cross. Pope Francis’ liturgy begins at 5 p.m. in St. Peter’s Basilica. Finally, at 9:15 p.m., the Stations of the Cross continue, symbolically following the suffering of Jesus from his condemnation to his death on the cross. Incidentally, the pontifex will no longer participate. “Due to the low temperatures of these days, Pope Francis will follow the Stations of the Cross on Friday evening from his residence, the Santa Marta Guest House, and will join the prayers of those who will gather in the Colosseum with the Diocese of Rome.” according to the press service of the Vatican.

Francis had spent three nights in hospital last week due to bronchitis. The 86-year-old was discharged from the clinic on Saturday and again led Palm Sunday mass in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday.
