The municipality of Amsterdam is planning an erotic center in a residential area. It replaces the famous red light district in the old town. However, prostitutes and residents are against the project.
They fear that the center could attract drug deals and party tourism. The proposed complex would be less safe than the current open red-light district, the prostitutes said. They fear for their safety. The authorities want to outsource prostitution and instead build a high-rise building that would house some 100 sex workers. There will also be restaurants, sex theaters and clubs.
In addition to the prostitutes, hundreds of residents have filed a report. Even the EU medicines agency EMA protested, as two of the proposed sites are close to their headquarters.
Discord in party tourism
The authorities, on the other hand, believe that the city center is heavily burdened by party tourism. More than 20 million tourists visit the Dutch capital every year. The district is one of the main attractions. Women openly offer sex in front of windows. However, according to the municipality, the neighborhood is in danger of becoming uninhabitable due to the crowds. The final decision is expected to be taken in the fall.
