Fewer attacks – Ukraine wants to export electricity to the West again

Date:

Ukraine plans to export electricity to the west again. Originally 400 megawatts had been agreed, but the actual amount would depend on domestic demand.

Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko announced this on Friday. “The Ukrainian electricity grid has been operating for almost two months without consumption restrictions and with a power reserve,” he said. Additional financial resources must be made available for the reconstruction of the destroyed and damaged energy infrastructure.

According to British secret services, the attempt to significantly deteriorate the country’s energy supply during the winter has probably failed. Since March there have been only minor attacks. The Russian army had attacked infrastructure in Ukraine with long-range missiles. Time and again, people had to do without electricity and without heating for long periods of time. With the onset of spring, according to London, the situation will now ease considerably. In addition, preparations may already have been made for next winter to prevent a repeat of the situation.

Export to Moldova and the EU
From June 2022 until the start of the targeted attacks on the energy supply in October, electricity was still supplied to neighboring Moldova and the EU. On balance, however, just over a quarter less electricity was generated in the Ukraine last year. This can be attributed, among other things, to the fact that the Zaporizhia power plant was completely shut down after attacks in September.

According to the British secret services, finding replacements and restoring the infrastructure is a major logistical challenge. For example, a high voltage transformer would weigh at least 100 tons.
