The fatal attack by a brown bear on a 26-year-old jogger in Trentino has alarmed many residents of the region. To ensure the safety of the population, the Trentino provincial government issued an order on Saturday to shoot the predator – and three others of its kind. In total, 100 bears live in the province.
The bear, whose traces were found on the man’s body, must now be sought, as the president of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, said at a press conference on Saturday. The presence of more than 100 bears in the Trentino area is “unacceptable,” he continued.
Criticism of resettlement project
In total, there are now four bears on the hit list. In recent years “too often only the welfare of the bears has been taken care of and people have been forgotten”, Fugatti criticizes the “Life Ursus” resettlement project, which aimed to reintroduce the predators to the area in 1999. Ten bears from Slovenia were then transferred to the Trentino region.
The brown bears in Trentino have multiplied in recent months, killing several animals. The autonomous province of Trento recently called for more freedom in capturing and killing dangerous specimens.
Animal rights activists pinpoint “witch hunt”
Animal rights activists are protesting the Trentino government’s order to kill the bear responsible for the attack. Animal rights activists warned of the danger of a “witch hunt” against bears, which would only fuel fear among local residents and tourists.
family to sue
The jogger was found lifeless on Thursday in a wooded area above the municipality of Caldes in Trentino. An autopsy revealed that the 26-year-old had died as a result of a bear attack. The victim’s family has announced that they will go to court. According to media information, the relatives want to sue both the autonomous province of Trento and the Italian state for returning bears to the area.
The focus is therefore on how the EU-funded project “Life Ursus” is being implemented. The measure was implemented without a popular referendum.
