Villach now has a “First Dog”: Amico has been living with mayor Günther Albel and his family for a few days. And as is often the case, the city boss’s family had no intention of purchasing an animal.
Love at first sight
But fate ensured that the paths of Günther Albel and Amico crossed each other in the Villach animal shelter. Shortly before Christmas, the mayor brought a food donation to the animal shelter and met Amico.
The three-year-old male was given up to the animal shelter because the previous owner unfortunately developed serious health problems. And the first time they met, it was love at first sight for both of them. The sweet male never left the city boss’s side during his visit. It was immediately clear to everyone involved that two souls had found each other here.
So, after a thorough investigation by the animal shelter staff, Amico recently moved in with the city boss’s family. “A dog always changes lives. He needs affection, time and certain needs,” said Mayor Günther Albel, who had previously carefully considered whether Amico could move in.
The male now feels very comfortable in his new home, but he does not seem to be an early bird, as his new owner reports: “Every morning around six o’clock we go out. But he’s not a fan of that.”

The city boss also calls on future pet owners to think carefully about their purchase and to visit the surrounding animal shelters: “In Austrian animal shelters, thousands of four-legged friends are waiting for a second chance. I believe that anyone who wants to have a dog or cat should first look at the animal shelter.
