Fatal hiking accident Wednesday afternoon in Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser in the Tyrolean Unterland: An 83-year-old Bavarian slipped on the hiking trail near Lake Hintersteiner See and then fell about 30 meters over steep terrain. The woman’s desperate attempts to cling to trees failed.
The devastating accident happened shortly after 2 p.m., according to police. The 83-year-old woman from Bavaria was walking along the hiking trail along the Hintersteiner See when she suddenly slipped on the gravel and initially fell about three meters backwards over the slope.
Desperate attempts to hold on
„She banged her head and shoulders against two smaller trees. She tried to hold on to the trees, but couldn’t,” police said. Finally, the woman continued to slide down the steep slope, strewn with rocks and branches. “She rolled over several times and after about 25 to 30 meters ended up against a tree, where she eventually lay injured,” the researchers continue.
