Call to Resistance – Burkina Faso: 44 civilians killed in attacks

Date:

At least 44 residents were killed and many others injured in an attack by armed groups on two villages in northeastern Burkina Faso, authorities said. The governor of the Sahel region, Lieutenant Colonel Rodolphe Sorgho, announced on Saturday that “terrorist groups” had attacked the two villages near the Niger border almost simultaneously on Friday night.

Security forces have now “defused” the armed groups in the event of an offensive, he said. They are currently “stabilizing” the situation. The governor called on people in his region to join a volunteer militia to help protect their villages.

Since 2015, Burkina Faso has been subject to regular armed attacks by jihadist groups, some of which collaborate with the al-Qaeda extremist network and the Islamic State (IS) militia. Thousands of civilians and security forces were killed in the fighting and two million people were forced to flee.

“Dynamic offensive” against jihadists
Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world. The West African country is ruled by a military junta that took power in a coup since September. At his inauguration last week, their new chief of staff, Célestin Simporé, announced that he would further expand a “dynamic offensive” against jihadists launched a few weeks ago. Offensively already “defunct”
