Many emergency services in Upper Styria had a rough night: Due to the snowfall, the rescuers were called for various operations, caution is still advised on the roads in Northern Styria.
Anyone who has ever had to drive over the Zellerrain in wintery conditions knows the pitfalls of this Upper Styrian pass road on the state border between Styria and Lower Austria.
Last night it was the demise of a freighter: the man got stuck with his truck on the slippery road, members of the Mariazell volunteer fire brigade freed the driver from his predicament.
Shortly afterwards, the emergency services were called to two other accidents: a semi-trailer truck also got stuck in Gollrad, and a car went off the road at the gas station in Mariazell and crashed into a road sign. There were no injuries.

According to meteorologist Martin Kulmer of Geosphere Austria (formerly ZAMG), up to a meter of fresh snow can be expected in the northern Alps by the weekend: “On the northern side of the Alps it snows continuously,” the connoisseur knows.
In the lowlands of southern Styria, on the other hand, it is getting warmer from day to day: “Temperatures between six and nine degrees are predicted,” says Kulmer, so it could only rain here.
