Firefighters have declared the condition of “extreme danger” from a dense cloud of toxic black smoke in the direction of the city center, after a fire broke out in a warehouse and car workshop in the Rothenburgsort district.
“The center of Hamburg is completely in the darka spokesperson for the Hamburg fire service confirmed to DPA regarding the fire declared overnight in the Rothenburgsort district, which lies along the river Elbe, east of the city centre.

The fire broke out this morning and since early this morning there has been a warning of the presence of a large cloud of toxic gases over that part of the German port city, about 5 kilometers from the center.
140 residents have been evacuated from the affected area, but in the following hours it was observed that the cloud moved rapidly towards the center of Hamburg.
The local police have called the population to close the doors and windows of their houseswhile about 200 members of the fire brigade try to extinguish the fire.
The authorities’ warning covers all of Hamburg’s city center and virtually its suburbs, warning that hazardous chemicals were present at the scene of the accident.
