The wave of violence in Israel continues through Easter. A 15-year-old Palestinian man was killed in a military operation in the West Bank on Monday. A 48-year-old Israeli woman who was attacked on Friday also died of her injuries. The suspects are still on the run.
Monday’s incident is said to have taken place at a refugee camp near Jericho. Armed forces entered the camp to arrest a terror suspect. However, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry, there was unrest in which a youth suffered gunshot wounds to the head, chest and abdomen. The 15-year-old passed away.
series of attacks
The situation in the occupied West Bank has been tense for months. According to Palestinian sources, 93 Palestinians have been killed in clashes with the Israeli army or in their own attacks since the beginning of the year. In the same period, 17 people from Israel, an Italian and a Ukrainian were killed in attacks. The West Bank was conquered by Israel in 1976. Today, more than 600,000 settlers live there. However, the Palestinians want their own state.
Only Friday evening, an Italian tourist and seven other holidaymakers were killed in an attack near Tel Aviv’s beach promenade. On Good Friday, an Israeli woman and two of her daughters were also attacked in the West Bank. The 48-year-old, from Great Britain, succumbed to her injuries on Easter Monday. Her daughters had died earlier.
To show their solidarity with the settlers, thousands of Israelis marched to the Eviatar outpost on Monday. There were counter-protests from the Palestinian side. 100 people would have been treated after using tear gas. Despite the heightened security situation, protests against the policies of the right-wing religious government continued. Tens of thousands demonstrated in the coastal city of Tel Aviv and other cities against the controversial judicial reform. They lit candles and observed a minute’s silence to remember the victims of the attacks.
Defense Minister Joav Galant announced that police and military units would be expanded. He also extended an entry ban for Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza Strip until Wednesday evening.
