He is a good grandfather, climbing around on a rock face with his six-year-old grandson when they go for a walk. But then something happens and the fun suddenly becomes deadly serious. In Obertraun, a seriously injured grandfather had to be flown to hospital and the helicopter had to rescue him without landing.
A family from the Hallein Ward took a trip to Obertraun on Easter Monday. Grandparents, parents and children walked from the Obertraun lido along the Ostufer hiking trail to Hallstatt train station. There, the 62-year-old climbed a rock wall with his six-year-old grandson, which was right next to the hiking trail. Around 4 p.m., a stone fell off about five meters high, causing the 62-year-old to fall and lie right in front of the family.
The 62-year-old suffered serious injuries to his upper body and received first aid from his relatives. However, the alerted rescue service was unable to drive the vehicle to the scene of the accident and called the emergency medical helicopter “Christophorus 99” for support. He was able to pick up the seriously injured man from the scene of the accident with a rope and deliver it to a hospital in Salzburg after a stopover. The six-year-old was unharmed.
