Over the Easter weekend, more than 40 boats aboard some 2,000 people arrived in Lampedusa. The Italian Coast Guard was also involved in the rescue of another 1,200 migrants in the Mediterranean. 38 people died in shipwrecks off the coast of Tunisia and in Maltese waters, 18 are still missing.
The two rescue operations on Easter Monday turned out to be particularly complicated. One of the boats, carrying 400 people, was adrift in the Ionian Sea off the coast of the southern Italian region of Calabria, the coastguard confirmed.
Among the new arrivals are the survivors of a shipwreck in Maltese waters off the coast of Lampedusa. At least 18 migrants died in the accident, and their bodies are still missing, according to witnesses. There are also 35 victims of Saturday’s shipwreck off the Tunisian coast.
Warehouse very overcrowded
The refugee camp on Lampedusa is hopelessly overcrowded. About 800 people can stay here, four times more than the maximum capacity allows.
