Over the Easter weekend, an apartment building in Ansfelden (Upper Austria) caught fire. 22 people are still not allowed to return to their homes. An affected person tells about the horror night.
A double bed, sofa and TV. That’s what Jürgen Hoffelner has to do with at the moment. The 42-year-old from Ansfelden temporarily lives in Gasthof Stockinger. He lost his actual home over Easter weekend, at least for now.
“As Loud as King Kong”
Because an apartment in an apartment building completely burned down, all residents of the house were evacuated from the building. In the middle of the night, the fire department knocked on Hoffelner’s door. “So loud you think King Kong is outside.” The 42-year-old just had time to get dressed and grab his wallet, mobile phone and cigarettes – then he had to get out. “You don’t forget something like that for the rest of your life.”
According to the mayor of Ansfelden, Christian Partoll (FPÖ), a total of 22 people are currently not allowed to return to their apartments. Just like Jürgen Hoffelner, you stay in a hotel or with family and friends. The reason: the apartment building has three entrances, one of which is still closed after the fire. Structural engineers examine the building and a decision must be made on Thursday. Hoffelner hopes to return to his own four walls.
The 42-year-old can smile again and has not lost his sense of humor. “But at first everyone was at their wits’ end.” Ten residents arrived at the Stockinger inn the morning after the fire. “Tired and shocked,” as one employee puts it.
Residents on the mend
In the end, the whole thing should end up light. Upon a brief inspection, Hoffelner found no major damage to his apartment, which was not directly affected by the fire. Most importantly, none of the residents were seriously injured. The three people who were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation are on the mend.
