The governor of Carinthia, Peter Kaiser (SPÖ), sees no reason to expand border controls with Slovenia. “Due to the actual figures obtained and after consultation with the local emergency services, there has been absolutely no reason for border controls between Carinthia and Slovenia for a long time and therefore no reason to extend them,” Kaiser said on Wednesday.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) had announced plans to expand border controls with Slovenia and Hungary. Kaiser: “Not enough that the ÖVP annoys thousands of commuters and holidaymakers every day. There is no explanation for border controls with Slovenia, while the border crossings with Italy, where many refugees are stranded, are not checked.” border controls to Hungary, on the other hand, are “more plausible”, according to the Carinthian governor.
Drexler welcomes the Secretary of the Interior’s decision
Styrian Governor Christopher Drexler (ÖVP) can agree with the decision of his party colleague, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, to extend border controls to Hungary and Slovenia by six months: “Illegal migration must be consistently prevented and criminal trafficking must be be fought with all vehemence. I therefore support the decision of the Interior Minister to further expand border controls,” said Drexler.
Drexler also said that until real solutions are found at the European level and effective external border control is enforced, such measures should also be taken. “They are fundamentally undesirable, but as long as they contribute to security in Styria, they are necessary,” said the governor of Styria.
