After the allegations of abuse against a disabled carer, many wonder: how are such people doing? The police psychologist Barnabas Strutz has a statement and describes it in an interview with the “Krone”.
“crown”: A disabled caregiver who has worked in this industry for years is said to have abused three disabled women. Unfortunately not an isolated case, what is the matter with such perpetrators?
Barnabas Strutz: The victims are often seen as supposedly easy prey. Due to the disability, they often do not even know what is right and wrong. As a result, the perpetrators have the feeling that they cannot be caught – or that no one believes the victim. Children, the disabled and the elderly are therefore often victims of abuse.
What role does balance of power play in such a situation?
Some abusers are turned on by having power. These are usually actually weak men with little self-confidence and success. They enjoy having someone completely at their mercy – and then simply abuse this power relationship.
How difficult are the police investigations in such cases?
This is a very sensitive area, especially in terms of care. It’s also very hard to get staff there, so maybe you can’t be so picky about the staff. The limitation often makes it difficult to make a clear statement from the victims. It must then become clear whether the statement is credible and whether it is sufficient for a conviction. When in doubt, the suspect can quickly get away with it. On the other hand, a prejudice can quickly put you in the wrong light as a suspect.
How should institutions react if there are actual allegations of abuse?
In institutions, the red line should be drawn much earlier in the event of abuse. Even if there is a suspicion, you as an operator must pay attention and react immediately. Sometimes it is not criminally relevant, but it does harm those affected. That needs to be addressed and changed.
