The Executive Director of the Frontex Agency for the Control of the External Borders of the European Union (EU), Fabrice Leggeri, has submitted his resignation to the board of directors of the European organization, which has already accepted his resignation and is exploring options for his replacement. Leggeri’s mandate has been marred by numerous scandals and several organizations accuse him of protecting him hot returns and other violations of the rights of migrants and refugees.
Leggeri made his position available to the council during a speech on Thursday, alleging that his mandate had been changed “quietly but effectively” according to a letter signed by him.
The announcement also coincides with the question announced the day before by the German NGO seaguard before the Court of Justice of the EI v Frontex for alleged human rights violations for its collusion in the Mediterranean with hot returns and abuse in the rescue of migrants on the high seas.
Leggeri and his team were also investigated by means of European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) since late 2020. Community sources have declined to comment on the details of the OLAF report already delivered to Frontex’s governing body, despite Brussels being aware of it because the Community Executive is part of the board of directors . However, an EU spokesperson has assured that the content is “very accurate” and believes it is now necessary to “learn the lessons” from this past phase. According to the text, Frontex management was aware of the human rights violations taking place and deliberately avoided exposing them.
Thanks to the support of the far right, the European PP and the liberals in the European Parliament, Leggeri managed to cling to his office despite the accusations. European socialists and Democrats have recalled that they have been calling for Leggeri’s resignation for at least a year and have demanded that despite his resignation, the agency’s allegations of abuse and fraud continue to be investigated.
