Just a few hours after the Russian government announced the complete encirclement of Bakhmut, Ukrainian troops are withdrawing from part of the eastern Ukrainian city, according to the latest findings of British military intelligence. It was previously said from Kiev that the Russian information would not correspond to reality.
Russia has stepped up its attack on the city in the eastern Donetsk region, the British defense ministry said in the intelligence agency’s daily situation report on Friday. The regular Russian troops and the units of Wagner’s mercenary force had improved their cooperation. “The Ukrainian armed forces are facing major supply problems.” They are forced to withdraw from certain positions in an orderly manner. “Ukrainian defenses still hold the western quarters of the city, but have come under particularly intense Russian artillery fire in the past 48 hours.”
According to both warring parties, the situation in the hard-fought area of Bachmut has deteriorated further in recent days. According to their own statements, after months of fighting that resulted in losses, the Russian attackers had gained ground and captured about 80 percent of the city. Ukraine, on the other hand, does not want to give up the city, which is now almost completely destroyed despite the problems. In this way the Russian attackers are forced into costly attacks and the Moscow troops are exhausted in this way. About 70,000 people used to live in Bachmut, but a few thousand still survive.
Germany says yes to fighter jets
The Polish government has now received the green light from Germany for the delivery of five MiG-29 fighter jets from old GDR stocks. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said: “This shows: you can build on Germany!” These are aircraft that the Bundeswehr had taken over from former stocks of the GDR’s National People’s Army (NVA).
In 2003, 22 MiG-29 fighter jets were sold to Poland. The sales contracts for armaments from Germany usually stipulate that the German Federal Government must agree to any subsequent transfer. Polish President Andrzej Duda said last week that his country had already delivered eight MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine.
