A 21-year-old suspect was arrested after explosive US intelligence documents emerged. He would be a member of the Air National Guard. Jack T. will appear in federal court on Friday.
This has been announced by Attorney General Merrick Garland. Jack T. was arrested Thursday in the small town of Dighton, south of Boston, Massachusetts. Live television aerial footage shows a man in red shorts and a T-shirt surrendering with his hands behind his head. In this position, he slowly backs away towards heavily armed emergency services, who then arrest him and push him into one of their vehicles with his hands behind his back.
The suspect started his job in September 2019, according to the National Guard. He worked as an IT and communications specialist and, as such, apparently also had access to many Secret Service documents. According to the Washington Post, the man nicknamed “OG” has spent months publishing hundreds of documents on the platform Discord, which is actually mainly used for video game exchange. Accordingly, the editors received information about the man from two other members of the group. There were about 24 members, including people from Russia and Ukraine.
White House: “Responsibility to the Country”
In light of the incident, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre called on online network operators not to distribute such information in the country.” Discord said the company is cooperating with law enforcement on the matter.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced he would review access to intelligence information and introduce auditing procedures at the Department of Defense. Austin said any member of the US military and Department of Defense employees with access to classified documents has a legal and moral duty to protect them and report suspicious activity.
Kiev military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov, meanwhile, said the leak would not affect Ukraine’s planned offensive or relations between the governments in Kiev and Washington. Only Moscow could take advantage of this.
