A dangerous stone chipping took place Friday morning near St. Margarethen ob Töllerberg (Carinthia). The rock fell on Töllerberger Strasse just before the school bus had passed. Part of the rock slammed into the front door of the old vicarage. There the son was about to go to the school bus.
The earlier rain and snowfall may have led to the rocks falling at 7 a.m. A 500 kilo rock had come loose 15 meters from the steep rock face opposite the parish church of St. Margarethen and a few meters from the foot of the FF St. Margarethen oT, had then rolled over Töllerberger Straße (L 111) and hit the pavement it stands still.
“Luckily no one was on the road. The school bus was just on its way. It is difficult to imagine what could have happened,” said fire chief Patrick Georg Achatz.
Boy was very lucky
Two larger pieces of the boulder came loose on impact and smashed into the entrance door of the old presbytery of the parish church of St. Margarethen oT. The son of the house was about to go to the school bus when he was almost hit by the rock. “He was also very lucky,” Achatz said.
The front door of the presbytery, two meters of fencing and a fence were damaged. During the investigation of the site by the state geologist, no further danger was identified. Töllerberger Straße (L 111) was completely closed between 08:00 and 09:30 and a local diversion was put in place.
