After the devastating airstrike by junta forces on a village in Myanmar that left many dead, eyewitnesses have revised the casualty count significantly upwards. At least 171 people died, including 38 children and 24 women.
Three helpers reported the figures by telephone to the German press agency on Friday. The men said they took part in the rescue effort after Tuesday morning’s attack in Pazigyi township.
Junta troops had attacked the village
Shortly after the attack, at least 100 people were killed. The military suddenly fired rockets at the site in the central Saigang region on April 11, as a new anti-junta People’s Defense Forces office was inaugurated there.
The participants were just eating, including children, said an eyewitness. The attack lasted about 15 minutes.
In the region, the army recently fought against armed groups opposing the junta. Generals seized power in Myanmar in February 2021. Then Prime Minister Aung San Suu Kyi was arrested and sentenced to more than 30 years in prison for alleged crimes. The army acts brutally against all opponents.
