Even if the weather of the past few days does not suggest it, the situational winter equipment requirement for cars and trucks (up to 3.5 tons) ends on Saturday. However, winter tires should remain on the vehicles in winter conditions.
The weather in April caused snowfall in many regions of Austria in recent days. Friday it snowed in large parts of the mountains and in the Waldviertel and not only fresh snow remained on the mountains. If it stays that way, swapping wheels is probably not advisable for now.
The situational obligation to wear winter equipment applies from November 1 to April 15 of the following year each year and states that in snow, mud or ice, cars must be on the road with winter tires or snow chains on at least two driving wheels. Winter tires should also be used outside the prescribed time if it is not possible to stop safely on the road in question with summer tires. Driving on snow and ice with summer tires not only risks high fines, but also problems with the insurance company.
