The Italian coastguard on Sunday rescued a fishing boat with about 600 migrants on board. More than 100 of them are said to have already landed in Catania, Sicily. Part of it is brought to the city of Augusta by naval ship.
The fishing boat was in distress. Italian media reported that the operation took place about 274 kilometers south of the coast of Sicily in Maltese waters. The rescue of the 600 people was complicated by bad weather conditions. 300 migrants will be landed in Catania, the remaining 300 in the city of Augusta. The Italian Coast Guard and the EU border control agency Frontex are involved.
NGO saw boat
So far, 276 people in distress have been rescued at sea off the coast of Lampedusa. They split into two boats. “We are happy that everyone is safe,” wrote the German NGO Sea Watch. The plane of the NGO “Seabird” spotted one of the boats on Saturday.
Since the beginning of this year, 32,769 people have arrived in Italy after sea voyages across the Mediterranean. Most migrants come from Ivory Coast (Ivory Coast), Guinea and Pakistan. 2,717 people are from Tunisia.
The government in Rome estimates that the reception of migrants will cost 853 million euros this year. An additional ship must be deployed to take people from Lampedusa to Sicily or the Italian mainland. In this way, the refugee camp on the island should be relieved more quickly, it said.
