The housing law, according to Otegi, will allow the construction of a “legal umbrella” for Basque institutions

Date:

The coordinator of EH Bildu has said that the agreement reached by EH Bildu with the Spanish government will allow for other types of housing policies in Hego Euskal Herria. According to him, the parties of the Basque parliament that voted against the Basque Housing Act in 2015 have no more excuses.

The coordinator of EH BilduArnaldo Otegi, has emphasized that the agreement that ERC and EH Bildu have reached with the Spanish government on the housing law will make it possible to “legal umbrella” allowing Basque institutions to implement other types of housing policies, such as limiting rents.

Moreover, he recalled that when the Basque Parliament passed the Basque Housing Act in 2015, some parties (PNV and PP) voted against it, claiming that there was not enough legal umbrella in the state. “We already have a legal umbrella in the state. Public land can now be used for social housing or rents can be capped,” Otegi said. “We already have that tool that should allow us make other types of housing policies in our country,” he added.

In a press conference held this Monday in Donostia / San Sebastián, Arnaldo Otegi confirmed the value of the agreement reached by ERC and EH Bildu with the executive of Pedro Sánchez on the new housing law.

In addition, he has chosen to reopen the housing debate to see “what alternative policies” can be implemented with the new tools provided by the law.
