Dramatic scenes played out on the outskirts of Vienna on Monday afternoon. Several rescue and police vehicles drove with flashing lights and sirens to a primary school in Liesing. The emergency medical helicopter Christophorus 9 landed in the school garden after a driver suffered cardiac arrest while driving.
First the good news: the mission was not for an injured or sick student. However, a pensioner suffered a heart attack while driving and had to be treated in an emergency by the professional rescue service. The police and several paramedics and doctors from the Vienna Professional Rescue Service resuscitated the 73-year-old until the arrival of the ÖAMTC helicopter Christophorus 9.
However, since there was no free space in the narrow residential area for the helicopter to land on, the pilot decided to set up the flying intensive care unit in the yard of the nearby Akaziengasse primary school. The patient, who was initially successfully resuscitated, was eventually intubated and flown for ventilation to a hospital in Vienna, where doctors continued to fight for his life. According to information from “Krone”, the pensioner’s condition is critical.
