After talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, one thing is clear: Russia’s naval units in the Baltic Sea and Pacific Ocean each have a new commander.
Former head of the Baltic Fleet, Admiral Viktor Liina (pictured in next tweet), is now in charge of the Pacific Fleet, Interfax news agency said Friday. “The Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Vice Admiral Vladimir Vorobyov, has been appointed commander of the Baltic Fleet. The relevant documents have been signed,” Interfax continued.
“On leave” after praise
The replacement for the previous head of the Pacific Fleet, Sergei Avakyants (pictured below), was announced Thursday. The news caused resonance, especially regarding the timing: just a few days ago, the Pacific Fleet had embarked on an unannounced major maneuver. Although Putin praised the progress of the exercises during a meeting with Shoigu in the Kremlin, Avakyants was granted leave before the end.
Officially, 65-year-old Awakjanz retired as he had reached retirement age. Independent media, on the other hand, pointed to the high losses that parts of the fleet led by Avakyants would have suffered in Ukraine. In the future, he will lead a staff for military sports and patriotic training.
Fleets fighting in the war in Ukraine
Russia has four fleets. The largest is the so-called Northern Fleet, which includes a heavy aircraft carrier and two missile cruisers. The second largest fleet is the Pacific Fleet, followed by the Black Sea and Baltic Fleets. Members of all four naval units also fight in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine – mostly as marines.
