Not Naked By Tree – Bali plans a tourist guide to good manners

Date:

After several tourist incidents, the regional government of Bali is planning a special good behavior guide. The dress code and manners around sacred monuments such as banyan trees and certain mountains should be explained.

“Not all foreigners know what is and what is not allowed in Bali,” the Bali Sun newspaper quoted a spokesman for the local justice ministry as saying on Tuesday. That is why the directive, which has been planned for a long time, must now be finalized as soon as possible.

The background is a number of incidents in recent weeks. Recently, a Russian woman posted a photo on social networks of her crawling up against a famous banyan tree in the Tabanan region. Hindus around the world worship this species of tree as sacred. As a result, the tourist had to leave the country. The same fate befell a Russian who posed shirtless on Mount Gunung Agung and also shared the photo online. For the people of Bali, the approximately 3100 meter high Fire Mountain is the seat of the gods, especially Shiva, the main deity of Hinduism.

Both have since apologized for their behavior. Governor Wayan Koster made it clear: “Bali does not reject tourists as long as they respect the customs and norms that apply here.” Holidaymakers could also be banned from renting scooters because they often show dangerous driving behavior and are on the road without a helmet or driver’s license.

The new “Good Tourist Guidebook” aims, among other things, to introduce Balinese culture and customs. In addition, temple etiquette and rules of dress and behavior around sacred monuments should be explained. A sarong, a long skirt for both men and women, is mandatory when visiting temples.
