Friend stabbed – knife murder: “I didn’t want him to die”

Date:

The alleged murderer Mehmet Y. (34) awaited Tuesday with a partial confession before the regional court of Salzburg. The unemployed worker admitted that on April 6 last year he stabbed one of his friends in his apartment in the city of Salzburg. Until now, the Austrian with Turkish roots had been silent about this. The suspect and his lawyer blamed drug addiction and an extremely difficult family background for his career – the man has 15 entries on his criminal record.

“I didn’t come to him with the idea of harming him. I didn’t want that. I didn’t want him to die,” said the suspect, when he spoke about his crime for the first time in the jury room at around 9:30 a.m. court of Salzburg Next: “Otherwise I would never have called the emergency call. He was a man I went to when I sought refuge. I had my peace there.”

The suspected killer himself called the police
Mehmet Y. started the police operation himself afterwards at 6:27 am. “I’m losing blood, someone stabbed me,” he allegedly said in an emergency call. Police officers found the drug addict dressed only in socks and sweatpants in front of the victim’s home on Joseph-Messner-Strasse. The bloodied man had a stab wound on his upper lip. In the apartment building, police officers found the 33-year-old victim motionless. The high school friend was covered in blood, covered in knife wounds. The victim’s intestines were hanging from the abdomen.

Five knife wounds to the head, chest, abdomen and back
The coroners found a total of five stab wounds to the head, chest, abdomen and back, as well as two blows to the head – inflicted with a cordless screwdriver – on the victim’s body. Cause of death: Bleeding to death after a liver puncture. According to Professor Christian Matzenauer of the Department of Forensic Medicine, it is doubtful that doctors could have saved the man, even if he had gone straight to the hospital. The victim was said to have lived for several minutes after sustaining the injuries.

The defendant has so far preferred to remain silent about the crime. Shortly after the incident, he told medical staff and police officers that the 33-year-old wanted to harm himself. He tried to kill himself with a knife in the bathroom. He would have wanted to avoid doing so, stabbed the victim and fled.

Dispute over a “joint” led to bloodshed
In court, he said he went to his friend’s house that night because there were problems with his partner. The victim even paid for the man’s taxi. Then – after consuming several beers – a dispute arose. The victim was angry that Mehmet Y. wanted to smoke cannabis in his apartment.

“I was shocked
“I told him to shut up,” the suspect said. Then his counterpart hit him. “I then took a cordless screwdriver from the table and hit him with it. Then it went back and forth. He grabbed a knife. I was in shock,” said the multiple convict. A scuffle ensued involving the knife.

He doesn’t remember exactly what happened. But he stung. And: “I saw a lot of blood on the ground. I noticed he is injured. It was not a pretty sight. I called 911, he took the phone and threw it away – like he didn’t want help.”

“I didn’t mean to stab.”
The father of the family denied – at least conditionally – intention to murder. “I didn’t mean to stab. I didn’t want to. I didn’t want anything to happen to him,” he said. The chairman wanted to know, “Have you considered that you could be dead after being stabbed?” The suspect replied, “Not at the moment.”

The suspect wrote a letter to the victim’s mother
After a conversation with his defender, Kurt Jelinek, the suspect decided not to say anything more and to stick to his confession. Jelinek stated: His client did not plan the crime and he is sorry that the situation got out of hand.

FMehmet Y. brought a letter for the victim’s mother, which he handed over to Stefan Rieder, the legal representative of the family. “I’m sorry. I hope she can forgive me. But I also understand if she can’t,” the suspect said in his last words before opening the evidence.

“There is no reason. There is no motive.”
Kurt Jelinek had announced a full, remorseful confession at the beginning of the trial. “There is no reason. There is no motive. There must have been a fatal altercation while taking drugs. It’s just a shame. He can’t undo it,” Jelinek said in his opening statement. The criminal lawyer asked the jury to to account for the man’s heavy drug use and resulting diminished mental capacity. A laboratory found morphine, cocaine, codeine, tranquilizers, cannabis and alcohol in the man’s blood. He initially refused an alcohol test. A reviewer confirmed the mental health.

Defense attorney highlights difficult childhood and drug addiction
Also: “If anyone had a rough childhood, it was him.” The father had a serious alcohol problem and was violent. When today’s suspect was ten years old, the father stabbed his sister. Then he put the knife in the child’s hand and wanted it to take the blame. One sister died of a drug overdose and one took her own life. “Drug addiction got him where he is today. He tried to get out of there. He was not strong enough to get rid of the addiction,” says Jelinek.

The “Krone” will continue to report. The verdict is expected on Tuesday.
