The US state of Nebraska has filed an antitrust lawsuit against some of the largest international truck manufacturers. The accusation: they would offer fewer trailers with diesel engines and eventually banish them from the road. There is a sense of a ‘conspiracy’ in favor of electric trucks.
Attorney General Michael Hilgers told a court that the brands Daimler Truck, Navistar – part of Volkswagen’s Traton – Paccar, Volvo Group North America and the US trade body Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association were affected.
He accused them of limiting the availability of diesel-powered semi-trailers to encourage the switch to electric trucks. Statements from the companies mentioned were initially unavailable.
Conspiracy in favor of California laws
The lawsuit alleges an “industry-wide conspiracy” to completely phase out medium- and heavy-duty vehicles with internal combustion engines. This is done to comply with California regulations, which in turn aimed to effectively eliminate semi-trailers with internal combustion engines.
Nebraska has a population of two million, about the same as Vienna. Hilgers is a Republican, just like newly elected President Donald Trump. As Attorney General, he fulfills the duties of Minister of Justice and Attorney General, in accordance with the American system.
