Several storm fronts are expected to cross Tyrol in the coming days. The residents of Assling in Osttirol got an early taste of the difficult weather situation on Thursday evening. A brief but unusually violent thunderstorm broke out there and caused extensive damage.
Shortly after 5:30 p.m., the world seemed to end in Assling in East Tyrol’s Pustertal Valley. A small-scale storm descended over the township. Streams turned into raging rivers in minutes.
The Kristeinbach also swelled and the water swept away trees and roots. A bridge over the “Platschbach” could not withstand the dragged material and was torn away.
Numerous mudslides and landslides
The danger did not just come from the streams. The steep slopes also gave way here and there. The result was mudslides and landslides. The Pustertaler Höhenstraße, among others, was hit. The fire brigade was deployed and had to block roads.
Fortunately, according to initial findings, no one was injured. The extent of the material damage caused by the short but violent storm will only become clear in the coming days.
