A large meadow fire affected five fire brigades, the Ministry of the Interior helicopter and the police in Schmaritzen (Carinthia) on Thursday. The flames also threatened to spread to a forest and a house.
It is still unclear what caused the fire in Schmaritzen near Strasbourg. The landowner raised the alarm and about sixty Florianis fought the fire. “The approximately one-hectare meadow area had to be extinguished with heavy respiratory protection,” reports FF Strasbourg.
Small part of the forest affected
Particularly dangerous: the fire also threatened to spread to the adjacent forest and a house. “Although a small part of the forest was already on fire, something worse was prevented thanks to the quick action of the fire brigade and the good equipment!”, reports Friedrich Monai, commander of the FF Strasbourg. A nearby pond served as a ‘water tank’.
Thaw presented challenges
The Ministry of the Interior’s ‘Dragonfly’ helicopter was also deployed to investigate the situation. “It was also a challenge that the ground thawed due to the high temperatures, making it muddy and slippery,” the commander continued. Some of the ten vehicles deployed had to drive with chains. The extinguishing work is still taking place and isolated areas are still being extinguished with embers.
