The European Parliament calls for the trial to investigate connections between Puigdemont and former Russian spies

The European Parliament has denounced Russian interference in the Catalonia trial and directly appealed to Puigdemont’s contacts with former Russian spies.

The European Parliament has denounced the matter Russian interference during the trial in Catalonia, directly referring to the contacts of the former President of the Generalitat and current MEP of the Junts, Carles Puigdemont, with former Russian spies in 2017and has claimed a internal investigation of the European Parliament as well as for the authorities in Spain to investigate these alleged links.

The resolution, which was approved by 432 votes in favor, 56 against and 18 abstentions, denounces Russian manipulation in democratic processes in Europe, and points out, among other things, the links between Catalan separatism and Moscow.

The text has had the support of PP, PSOE, Ciudadanos and Vox, while ERC, Unidas Podemos and Junts have rejected it and the The PNV abstained from votingin a vote in which Puigdemont did not participate.

The European Parliament in particular expresses its position “deep concern” for the alleged relations between the Catalan independents and the Kremlin and points to the “large-scale disinformation campaigns conducted by Russia in Catalonia”, as well as “the intense contacts and number of meetings between Russian agents and representatives of independence”.

In this sense, it calls on the competent judicial authorities to “effectively investigate the connections of Members of the European Parliament allegedly linked to the Kremlin and the attempts at destabilization and interference by Russia in the European Union”.
