5 out of 8 toilets out of order – “toilet breakage” forces AUA pilots to turn back

Date:

An extremely unpleasant problem has forced an Austrian Airlines long-haul plane to turn back on its way to New York. Because due to a vacuum problem in the pipeline, five of the eight on-board toilets were defective. With 300 passengers, a little short on an eight-hour flight…

The Boeing 777-200 ER with the registration OE-LAP was flying over Amsterdam when it was decided to return to Vienna due to “toilet breakage”. Because only three of the eight toilets were functional. Clearly not enough for 300 passengers and a dozen crew members…

Repair not possible in New York
And even with a lot of discipline and perseverance, it would have been problematic, because a repair in New York would not have been possible and therefore the return flight would have had to start with a reduced toilet capacity, as the AUA confirmed to the “Kron”. The return flight New York-Vienna with the number OS088 was also cancelled.

On the road as a “talker” during Corona
During the corona pandemic, when the demand for long-haul flights collapsed, the OE-LAP was converted into a cargo plane and was mainly used to transport protective clothing and medical supplies. Aircraft converted in this way were nicknamed “Prachter”, a combination of passenger and cargo ship.

After the pandemic, “Sound of Music”, as the plane was christened, was dismantled. It was not until February 2023 that the machine was last converted, the six-seat business class was reduced in size and premium economy and economy were expanded. The plane is now 26 years old.
