Lots of tanks, but not enough ammunition: the German government is wrestling with this dilemma in its military aid to Ukraine. In order to be able to deliver quickly, Berlin has already made inquiries in Bern. But Switzerland maintains its strict no to the transfer of arms and ammunition to Ukraine.
After a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) in Berlin on Tuesday, Swiss President Alain Berset justified this with the neutrality of his country, which also does not belong to the EU or NATO. “You can’t ask us to break our own laws,” Berset said.
“Adjust rules if necessary”
Swiss neutrality laws meant that the government could not provide military support to either side in a conflict. However, it is necessary to look at “how one should, must or can develop there”, explains Berset. These discussions are also taking place in Switzerland. “It is important that we comply with the rules and adapt if necessary,” continued the head of state.
When ordering weapons, Switzerland requires assurances that the material will not be forwarded to warring parties. However, Germany wants to export Swiss ammunition for the Gepard anti-aircraft tank from its stocks to Ukraine. The government in Bern has so far rejected an exemption for this, as have similar applications from Denmark and Spain. Attempts in parliament to change the law have so far failed.
