Belgian customs destroyed 2,352 cans of beer from the US because the cans had the protected designation of origin “Champagne”. As the association of French champagne producers announced on Tuesday, the delivery was intercepted in Antwerp, Belgium, in February. The French trade association CIVC then demanded “the destruction” of the “illegal goods”.
On Monday, the delivery was finally destroyed in Ypres, Belgium.
“The recipient of the goods in Germany has been informed and has not challenged this decision,” said the association of champagne producers and was satisfied with the “successful cooperation with the Belgian customs authorities”.
The beer cans of the “Miller” brand from the USA were labeled “The champagne of beers”.
