The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, which is occupied by Russian troops, is said to contain US nuclear technology as well. Now the government in Washington is warning Russia not to touch the technology.
According to a report by US broadcaster CNN, the US Department of Energy has written a corresponding letter to the Federal Atomic Energy Agency of Russia (Rosatom). The letter would have been sent almost a month ago. The letter points out, among other things, that software, goods and technology at the nuclear plant are subject to US export controls.
If these were to fall into Russian hands or be used by Russian citizens, it would be a “breaking the law”, the Energy Ministry insists. According to Washington, there is as yet no evidence of any Russian use. Nothing is known about a reaction from Rosatom so far.
Always attacked
The International Atomic Energy Agency has been trying for months to establish a protection zone around the site of the nuclear power plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, to avert the danger of a nuclear catastrophe. After shelling, the power station had to be supplied with diesel generators several times via emergency power.
