The US government has announced new military aid to Ukraine for an amount of 325 million dollars (almost 297 million euros). The package mainly contains ammunition for weapons systems such as the Himars multiple rocket launchers and artillery shells, spokeswoman for US President Joe Biden Karine Jean-Pierre said Wednesday (local time). According to the White House, the new aid will come from supplies from the US military.
“This new security assistance will enable Ukraine to continue to courageously defend itself in the face of Russia’s brutal, unprovoked and unjustified war,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said. The US is considered Ukraine’s main ally in the defense against the Russian invasion and has been supporting Ukraine with billions of military aid since the beginning of the Russian offensive war.
New troops for front use
Ukraine is preparing new troops for the frontline, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Specifically, it concerns border troops that he visited on Wednesday in Volhynia in the border triangle of Ukraine with Belarus and Poland. Border troops from Ukraine have already been deployed to the fronts, including in the hard-fought city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine.
“Together with all our defense and security forces, the border guards are fighting at the front, even in the most difficult areas,” Zelenskyy said in his evening video address. “We are also preparing new units – border guard units – to join our active operations, to join the movement that we are gradually developing.”
Unusual light trail over Kiev
An unusual streak of light on the nighttime horizon over Kiev triggered an air-raid alarm in the Ukrainian capital. Shortly afterward, the city’s military administration announced on Telegram that a disused NASA satellite that had entered Earth’s atmosphere may have caused this phenomenon.
“An air raid siren has been issued to prevent injuries from falling debris,” it said. The anti-aircraft defenses had not become active. The satellite may be the RHESSI space telescope, whose return to the atmosphere was announced Thursday evening. The telescope was launched in February 2002 and the mission ended in October 2018.
