Bullying allegations – British Deputy Prime Minister Raab resigned

Date:

British Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab announced his resignation on Friday over allegations of bullying. In a letter he announced that he would resign from his position as Minister of Justice.

Raab said he felt obliged to accept the outcome of the investigation into the allegations against him. At the same time, he rejected most of the allegations. Of several allegations, only two were recognized as justified, he wrote. However, the reviewer found “that not once in four and a half years have I insulted or yelled at, thrown objects or otherwise physically intimidated or deliberately humiliated anyone,” Raab said.

Sunak ordered the investigation
A spokesman for Prime Minister Rish Sunak said on Thursday that the prime minister had received an inquiry into allegations of bullying against Raab. Sunak himself ordered the investigation after two formal complaints were filed against Raab in October, a few weeks into his tenure.

According to the Guardian, Raab is feared for his leadership style and his dealings with subordinates. The “Sun” reported in November 2022 that the former Brexit negotiator threw tomatoes from a salad across the room in a fit of rage. A spokesman for Raab denied the incident.

“Climate of Fear” in the Ministry
As the “Guardian” reported, during Raab’s first term as Justice Minister from September 2021 to September 2022, there was a “climate of fear” in his ministry. The head of department was “manipulative” and “aggressive”.

Raab himself told Sky News in February that he had “behaved professionally at all times”. However, if the bullying allegations continued, he would resign.” According to a recent survey, 44 percent of Britons believe that Sunak was aware of the allegations against Raab when he brought him into his cabinet.

Among other things, Sunak won the party’s internal elections in October on a pledge to restore “integrity, professionalism and accountability” to the government after his predecessor Boris Johnson’s scandalous tenure and Liz Truss’ brief interlude.
