Karl S. was a railway worker. He did his job with passion and took a well-deserved retirement at the age of (only) 62 – in March! But he was not allowed to live with his partner in retirement in the idyllic town of Pielach near Melk. As reported, their son was allegedly brutally ripped out of his life. With a small bore rifle! It would be a single shot that René M. (42) fired on the stepfather in the kitchen on Thursday evening. He was deadly.
Barricaded in the attic of the house
What happened next is quickly told: the mother of the alleged perpetrator alerted the police and fled to a neighboring house, he himself barricaded himself in the attic of the parental home. For four hours, a negotiating team tried to persuade the man to give up. The Cobra special unit surrounded the house – always targeting the perpetrator. But giving up was not an option for the plumber from Vienna.
It was a cool, quiet night in the cordoned off area around the crime scene. “And suddenly it was like the wild west,” says neighbor Hermine Buchmayer. “I’ve been here for 62 years,” says the 76-year-old. “There was never any action. We had such a quiet village.”
Until those shots echoed through the night at 11 p.m. There were four or five, Buchmayer recalls. Apparently shot at the Cobra officers by René M. – only one came from the opposite direction: The 42-year-old was slightly wounded in the arm by a police gunshot and was eventually overpowered. What drove him mad is still unclear.
In Pielach no one wants to guess. On day 1 after the tragedy, there is shock, anger, sadness. Petra Buchmayer (49): “We are in the countryside here. You think something like this only happens in Vienna.” Her father Siegfried (73) is pragmatic, at least when it comes to confronting the lady with the police: “If that happens in America, he will never go there again.”
