Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny is dead! The 47-year-old was found lifeless in the penal colony where he was serving a long prison sentence.
According to a statement from Russian prison authorities, Navalny felt “unwell” during a walk on Friday, “lost consciousness almost immediately” and died shortly afterwards. The alarmed doctors were unable to revive the prisoner.
The Kremlin has “no information,” and neither does Navalny’s team
The Kremlin said it had “no information on the cause of death.” However, all necessary investigations would be carried out. President Vladimir Putin was informed of his opponent’s death.
Navalny’s press secretary said she could not confirm the death. The opposition leader’s lawyer is on his way to the ‘Polar Wolf’ prison in Siberia.
Former Chief of Staff: “If this is true, Putin killed Navalny”
Navalny’s former chief of staff made this clear on X: “We have no reason to believe state propaganda. If that is true, then it is not ‘Navalny died’, but ‘Putin killed Navalny’ and only that.”
Just this week, there were reports that Navalny had been placed in solitary confinement for the 27th time for a period of 15 days. The 47-year-old was sentenced to years in prison in a penal colony.
Convicted of extremism
Navalny was convicted of extremism, among other things; he had always denied the accusation. His political movement was banned and close associates were imprisoned or fled abroad.
The Putin regime tried to take out Navalny in 2020 with a poison attack. Under international pressure, Navalny was taken to Germany, where he was treated at the Berlin Charité.
Ice cold isolation before the presidential election
After his recovery, Navalny decided to return to Russia but was arrested at Moscow airport on January 17, 2021. Last December, the politician, who was classified as a political prisoner, disappeared for several weeks. It later emerged that the justice system had transferred him from the European part of Russia to the prison camp in the far north of Siberia. Navalny suspected he needed to be as isolated as possible there before the presidential elections in March.
