A 54-year-old woman pushed the accident car aside with her own car in the district of Gmünd (Lower Austria) to free a 19-year-old. The young woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The lifesaver tells the “Krone” about her selfless act of heroism.
“I just had to help!” For Renata Wais, doing nothing was not an option. When the 54-year-old accidentally drove past an accident site in the Gmünd district on Saturday morning, she didn’t think twice. “I saw someone waving his hands on the side of the road, and then another,” the woman recalled in an interview with “Krone”. Only then did she see a broken car in the meadow a few meters away. She stops and runs to the wreckage. “Suddenly I heard faint cries for help.” When she looks around, she sees a young woman lying under the car.
Acted with presence of mind
“I only saw the head, there was blood everywhere,” the 54-year-old is still shocked. The 19-year-old from the district of Waidhofen an der Thaya was traveling with three friends when she was thrown from the car in an accident in Kirchberg am Walde and her chest was trapped under the vehicle. “The boys and I tried to free them, but we couldn’t,” says Wais. Quick-witted, the Czech got into her own car and carefully pushed aside the wreckage of the accident inch by inch. At that time, she didn’t care about the scratches on her own car.
Instinctively helped
Wais probably saved her life with it. She did not leave her side until emergency services arrived. The 19-year-old was taken to hospital by helicopter with serious injuries. “The young woman was shaking. I tried to calm her down,” says Wais, who also celebrates her birthday on Saturday.
The 22-year-old driver from the district of Gmünd probably entered the banquet with his car under the influence of alcohol and without a driver’s license and slipped. A breathalyzer test was positive.
