The head of the radical Islamist group Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, may have been killed in an Israeli army operation in the Gaza Strip. Images are currently circulating of a body buried under rubble resembling the Hamas leader.
“Three terrorists were eliminated” during operations in Palestinian territory, the Israeli army said Thursday. The possibility that “one of the terrorists is Sinwar” is currently under investigation – at this time “the identity of the terrorists cannot be confirmed.”
According to Israeli media, an army patrol encountered three “armed terrorists” in a partially destroyed house. A firefight took place and the fighters were eliminated. However, retrieving the bodies is not that easy because the house and its surroundings are being mined. Genetic testing is relatively unproblematic because Sinwar has been in Israeli custody for years and Israel therefore has his DNA, Israeli public broadcaster Kan explained.
The first reports of Sinwar’s death began in late September
Sinwar is believed to be the mastermind behind the October 7, 2023 massacre that sparked the Gaza war and regional escalation. In late September, media reports suspected that the 61-year-old had been killed in an Israeli airstrike. This was supported by the fact that he had long ago broken off contact with the Hamas representatives who were present at the ceasefire negotiations. However, there were reportedly “signs of life” from Sinwar the week before. He is said to have contacted representatives from Qatar.
