At least 12 people were killed in a bomb attack on a Pakistani anti-terrorist force in the unrest-ravaged province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday. Dozens more people were injured.
The strong explosion at the anti-terror center caused the entire building to collapse and many people were trapped under the rubble, the local dpa police chief in Islamabad said. A mosque was also destroyed by the force of the explosion. More deaths are feared. According to initial findings, an assassin blew himself up and a second explosion is believed to have occurred. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Peace treaty with government failed
For some time now, the Pakistani security forces have been taking more vigorous action against the Taliban in their country. Late last year, the Pakistani Taliban declared the end of a peace treaty with the government in Islamabad and have since claimed multiple attacks. In January, at least 84 people died in a suicide bombing in the metropolis of Peshawar, most of them police officers.
The Secret Service held the TTP responsible, but the Islamists denied any authorship. The Pakistani Taliban are independent of the Islamist Taliban government in neighboring Afghanistan.
